An UNC 1943 with original surfaces will have a matte finish, not shiny. Proof-like surfaces are a product of reprocessing (replating) which was NOT done by the Mint.
Original 1943 steel cents will not have zinc plating on the edge. The metal stock sheets were plated prior to the blanks being punched out, the lack of plating on the edge is a major reason why so many are rusty.
interesting, I think I have a couple of these that are plated, specifically the ones from my childhood collection that I most likely got from the littleton coin catalogue. You can definitely tell the differnce (i bought a roll of steel cents recently) and they are just TOO bright, and yes have that bubbly, painted over look to them.
