Ok, this may sound like a stupid question. But what is with some of the really odd colors I am seeing on pennies. Some of them look like the swirling oil marks in parking lots.. Others have a brown color, but with pink and orange colors swirling. Some have odd orange and yellow color on a nice shiny red coin. Is that from people cleaning them? Or from sitting in something? Or natural causes? I've never paid much attention to penny colors until I started roll hunting, and never expected to see that many different ones.. Thank you!

Without pictures, I would say and know that rainbow colors can be achieved with careful heat treatment.

True, but artificial toning produces no additional value. Natural toning sometimes does. Colors can be on coins for different reasons, pictures would help.

Rainbow artificial toning can actually reduce the value. You just have to know what to look for. Experience needed.

Pennies turn color naturally over time from orange to red to brown. The time varies with each penny. Your pennies seem to be in various stages.

The green color is from adverse environment. It is called electrolosis, a chemical reaction on copper. It is often called corrosion.

What about the first picture? Someone altered it? And thank you for the info on the others.. I was thinking it might have been from oil on peoples hands, just like oil and water in the parking lot it causes a rainbow color..

First one looks like nail polish or paint to me. Is there a film? or is it just the copper is a different color?

As they change color, sometimes different areas of the coins change at different rates.

No film or scratch marks that I can see.. which is odd.. its to good to be painted. The Lincoln on the inside is red, but nicely visible
