Earle42 I saw a sight yesterday that would have turned your stomach. It did mine anyway. I was out metal detecting a Civil War site and came across a huge pile of glass and ceramic insulators. Unfortunately all were broken. some were used for target practice as indicated buy the numerous shell casings I was hitting on, and others were just were just purposely smashed against some rocks and each other. I would estimate there to have been a couple of thousand of these things at one time. The site was just off the RR tracks used by the Confederate Army to transport troops and supplies. Most were common Hemingray's and Brookfield's, but I did ID a few purple Whitall Tatum's and several dark amber Tillotson Threadless.

I started collecting newspapers a few years ago, but I abandoned it very quickly when I realized that I would have no place to put them. Still active in coins, and the core of my collection easily fits in a 1.5x1.5x1.5 ft safe. Anything outside of that space is basically accumulation.

Ouch
But... it likely would be well worth your while to go back and try to find the pieces of the amber Tillostson threadless insualtors. Why?

The insualtor price guide lists 5 different typses of Tillotson threadless in amber. The price guide values are for very near mint piece - granted - but even repaired and glues threadless can net some good money since these were utlitarian and normally damagd in use anyway.

The lowest price for an amber Tillotson is over $1,000. Depending on the style - this goes up to $7,500!

Depending on how damaged - you could be looking at some nice money.

Its amazing what people will waste without knowing what they are doing. I can imagine those who smashed these finding the value of the thousands they potentially damaged.

PM me and I can help. I can tell you anything you need to know about repair (the type of glass glue to use or who to contact for resin repairs), and get you directly in touch with the people needed. When it comes to selling, I can also put you in touch with the proper people - its a specific insulator auction that would bring the right/fair price to you.

I would go back and look for every piece I could from from al the amber Tillotsons. The more - the better. You are talking some top quality pieces.

Also since you know they were used there - looking into how to dig insulators could prove lucrative (hard work though). Make note of where the Tillotsons lay and do some raking around to see if they missed any also.

I hope this works out for you - it could net you some nice returns and make sure history is conserved by getting these back into the hobby.

Yes coins don't take up a lot of space. Yet some hobbies really do.

A few years ago - probably in 2012 - I was able to take almost my entire coin collection in my backpack to show it to a bunch of friends I was visiting. Was pretty heavy though (about 15 pounds, IIRC).
I would love be able to do that now, actually; sadly, my collection's current distributed-all-over-the-apartment state kind of makes it somewhat complicated to assemble such a big part of it (or indeed to search for any specific coin, as I found out the hard way several times recently; in particular, when trying to make a photo for my planned 1000th post contest, which is hereby postponed until I can find that darned nickel).
