I finally managed to stop at the bank when the teller with the old bills was there, and she had 1 of the old bills left. It's a 1963A $10 SN C21015082A. It's great that I was able to recover one of the older bills but what really makes me feel bad is that the rest of them were given to ordinary customers, so who knows where they are now. Anyone who isn't a coin collector won't know the real value of uncirculated 10 dollar bills and they'll just spend them, which makes uncirculated specimens more valuable...
Out of curiosity, how did the subject come up? Did you ask the teller if they had any interesting notes in their drawer? Or was he just making small talk?
This was awhile back, but at my main pickup bank in walking distance from my house, the tellers know I collect old bills and that's when I was offered the old 5s and 10s.
