it is 5mm or close to a quarter inch thick and 38mm wide nearly a inch and a half imagine getting a weeks wage in those coins in that era.

Its a cartwheel two pence... these are beasts of coins but not too uncommon over here, the hard part is to find one in nice condition.


I bought this little lot a couple of years back, but I have seen some better ones on the forums...

that is a nice Twopence I have one locked away of the same quality but I have never seen the cartwheel penny with the vertigre before or green rust or whatever its called.
they are not very thick on the ground here, considered to be foreign I think.

Well, they're British, so they would be foreign in Australia.

Not really. The first colony was established in 1788 and UK coins were a means of exchange so it's quite possible that these cartwheels circulated as currency there, along with Spanish coins local exchange credit notes and bartering.

the first real copper minting in Australia didn't begin until 1910 and with two world wars in between it makes some low mint items very hard to get.
