I would like to take a moment. to thank the individual that messaged myself. about the law and math for lighting anything. I ready a lot of the information there on that site. I was surprised to see that there is actually a mathematical formula. to proper lighting and diffusion. again thank you so much. thank you for following my thread. I will try to buy that book as well. again thank you

ok wanted to try some of this new information on lighting. got rid of all the diffusion. I added a third lamp made sure I stayed outside my arches of angle which is no less than 57 degrees. for a full frame camera. wanted to try a loonie very reflective. here what I got. this is a lot of light. but if the math they show is correct than diffused light is brighter. they explain this as the law of reflection. there is math there to prove there theory

Quote: I ready a lot of the information there on that site Which site it this? I'd love to find a mathematical way to optimally light each coin, without resorting to trial and error. I often have to fiddle around with the lights for each coin shot, to see what might yield an acceptable picture. Shiny coins, especially reverse proofs, are the worst. In some cases I can't get anything acceptable, or I have make the time-consuming switch to the Nikon PB-4 (tilt shift) bellows to see if I can get decent results.

happy new year pepactonius in advance. I still don't know how to attach links here. they have a forum about this lighting . plus there is lots of information and various links about this whole concept. there is also some coin shooting links there as well.. after reading mark goodman book. I realize he applies this theory. when lighting his coins. pepactonius do a google search on .family of angles. there is links there and the math you are looking for and if you don't mind could you post some of the stuff here on the forum. also while there try to find Cambridge. they have information on this dave had attached some of this to my thread along time ago. I just did not understand what they saying . have a great one

Careful not to make the wrong conclusions based on the family of angles concepts. Coins are a special case, and if you go by the FOA suggestions you will be doing exactly the wrong thing...

thank you ray you are right. I found the book the individual message myself about. I read some of it. I agree it takes us away from the way coin shooting is done here. I looked at some of my older images. I will be sticking with the way we work here FOA is ok but not for all coin shooting. I need to learn more about the camera and how they work. ray you have mastered a lot of the ways to proper lighting. I found some of your work in there forum. so I know that members from that forum are coming here. thanks ray hope you have a very happy new year. I am getting ready to put together. my room for working on coins and photographing. have a great one

I went to a print shop. told them what I was doing. showed them my set up. I asked them what type of paper they would recommend to do this. they was amazed by the photos here. they sold me some paper here is the results. it helps to light the nickel dollar more evenly.
