Actually the reason for the die wear towards the rim is that the coins are shaped by the dies. Metal is moved into new locations. Some areas the coin is higher, and other areas lower. This constant metal movement causes wear on the dies. Because the same motion happens over and over for as much as one million strikes, this constant wears down the dies. Thus the EDS example coins will be a lot fresher than the VLDS examples.
