Hard to see without touching but this 72 penny has a smooth, very rounded edge that leeks more like he rounded edge of a bottle cap. The rim is raised higher than normal as well.

Is this possibly a very weak hammer die?

Thanks,
Barq

Not an error but PMD. It's a Dryer Coin. There are plenty of very informative threads on this if you search the forum.

Welcome to the forum Barb. A lot of the 72's seem to have been heavily struck where the obverse side of the cent shows very distinctive strong rims.

to CCF. It is either a Dryer Coin or a spooned coin or it has an added edge (frame) to it,IMHO. Not an error.

Thanks for all the help! It would have awesome if it was an error, but I am just glad to know what it is. This has been sitting in a dresser along with other coins I had picked out of a bunch of bankrolls more than 12 years ago and I just now remembered that they even exist.

I am just now getting back into the hobby so it's nice to start off with an answer to an old mystery (to me).

It's not a Dryer Coin. Internal devices are unaffected. But it has been altered/damaged outside the Mint.

Thanks Mike!

Barq! Seems that a few of us stepped away for a decade or more to return. Have fun with the forums!

Oops....when I posted mine someone on this forum told me it was a Dryer Coin. Thanks for the correction! Maybe these kinds of damaged coins got stuck in the coin mechanism of a coin operated machine....like a coin operated dryer? Hahaha
