If you want your 'hobby' to really have grounds as an abstract form of investing (which will more likely than not, do better than traditional investments)... maybe a great starting point for a new collector would be 'high graded' or 'low mintage' coinage. If that was where my focus would have started 20+ years ago!

Jefferson nickels may offer the best chance to complete a set from circulation - Or at least get close .....

Lincoln Memorial "Cents" (aka "Pennies" - A penny for your thoughts) could also be on the list and then comes the State Quarters .... Get those three complete and we can suggest more!
