It seems like a clear error in the i. Couldn't find anything on this error, but it seems like a clear error. Also the 9 does not seem complete. I need opinions. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

That's what I thought too but it's too clean. No major scrapes in the area and gunk built up around the edges. Also the 9 is incomplete

9 is OK. Just lousy way the Mint makes them. And the falling letter? I've seen this before and never have been satisfied with PMD as a reason. Note if you look close, you can see where the I should have been.

I recently posted a very similar "error" and was told it was PMD. Something about a rolling machine causing the letter to move, mine was real clean looking too.

The dates are on the master die, which makes the working dies. So how can something that looks like that be anything more tha PSD. The coin in question is made of copper. The copper does not come in solid chunks that is rolled out to the thickness needed for the coin. It is actually layers of copper pressed together. This is why we get lamination errors. Because devices like letters and numbers are not that wide there is very little that "ancors" them to the rest of the coin. If struck just right at just the right angle will cause it to sheer off from the rest of the coin. Not a very hard concept to understand.

Post Strike Damage. Deters from the value of the coin turning into a cull coin. (undesirable)

The reason it doesn't look like PMD is the damage probably happened a while ago. Since it has been circulating indication of damage has been removed in a similar way that details are removed (notice the ear has been flattened/smoothed into the hair)
