As I stated in my post, financial institutions basically hate halves. Some have not had activity on them for months. If they want to refuse service, then that's ok! Most large city banks have the rat maze for customers, so there is minimal interference. For the most part rolls are stored in the vault as there is no call for them and I don't want to bog things down repeatedly or make repeated trips. I may only go to some banks as a non customer in out of town once a year. The financial institutions that I do have accounts with I expect them to provide the services they offer. If I have delayed you at some point in life the manner in which I collect and/or invest, then please forgive me!

I don't get it--people in line at a bank means job security for the tellers, right? If people weren't coming in getting what they want--means cut back in number of tellers. BANKS make money no matter what, so they shouldn't have attitudes when We ask for a favor. Also, OUR TIME IS VALUABLE! What if we start charging FEES for the time we have to wait in line . I know, I know--business is business, but the attitudes we could do without--how about making a big scene when they tell us we can't have those halves ! (They'd probably call security)

Simple answer: call ahead. They'll get them together during slow moments and have them ready when you arrive.

Simple answer: call ahead. They'll get them together during slow moments and have them ready when you arrive. --- Yes that is the best way and the tellers will appreciate it. I dropped by a few branches yesterday asking for halves (no rolls and only 6 or so total loose) and then switched to pennies. I was able to get two $25 boxes but that's it. Call your branch and ask them to order what you need, and you should see it in a week or so...if you can wait that long.

All great thoughts........ Yeah .... I don't do it when they're busy certainly and it's only ever taken a few moments anyway. It's just that if there was a "coin fee", they should have told me that the first time.....I'm not a member there and that's okay. Banks HATE halves and are happy to get rid of them so..... I've now been to every bank in town I think (about 135,000 people here) So I will just order from my own bank. I dump at my small branch and will order from the Main branch. But I wanted to hit all of them until they were cleaned out and I've done that. ONLY THAT ONE BANK MENTIONED THE "COIN CHARGE" THOUGH !! I must have went to 35 banks or more. I found one bank that had plenty, but wouldn't give me any because I wasn't a member....... I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT AT ALL ! It was in a nearby little town and not convenient to open up an account or anything......just thought i'd try it so...... It's just that that one bank let me come there 3 other times before there was suddenly a "problem" and it irked me ! If they only want to do business with their customers.......that's fine !\ So, I'm down to "ordering" like many others are now anyway...... I'm anxious to get my first one ordered !

A few years ago I went to Wells Fargo to get change for a $100 bill. They wouldn't change it because I didn't have an account.
"It's so we don't get stuck with counterfeits."
"But you're a bank. If you can't tell if it's counterfeit then how could I?"
"We'd have no way to find you after you leave."
"What would you do to the bill after I leave that you can't do now?"
(looking around and pointing out I'm the only customer there.)
".....Would you like to open an account?"

Yeah .......it just kills me !! So, if I go back to that one bank and ask for one roll of pennies........ they'll charge me a $10.00 "coin fee"........ ? It's a bank man ! I know that if you look at the "inner workings" of a bank, that it's a different perspective on their part,...... but cmon ! It just doesn't seem right that an American in his own country can't be traveling along.......see a bank......and pop in and grab some "coinage" ........pay them the cost of the coinage and then go about your merry way !! It just ain't right people !

Always attempt to put yourself in the other persons shoes. For example if you worked in a bank as a teller. Your just sitting there minding your usual transactions and along comes someone wanting special services that require you to actually get up. Oh my feet, my back, etc. Sounds funny but many times I've gone to one of the banks I do buisness with with a bag full of coins. To avoid a charge I just say for deposit in my account. Then this usually frail girl has to attempt to haul that stuff to the coin counters in the back room. One teller had to call for assistance from some guy due to the weight. Then there is those mazes of ropes to go through to get to the next teller. If everything worked smooth and fast those would not be required. All it takes is one person to hold up a teller's time and poof, you need those mazes of ropes for the people piling up. One more thing is just how do you all think a bank makes money giving you and receiving from you a pile of coins? They don't. The main thing they attempt to do is get you to open an account there. So what is the problem. Open up accounts all over the area and a few other areas also. Not meaning to back up banks with whatever they do to make money but as a person that stands in lines I always want to do something to the person holding up the entire line

Here's a little known fact. The most likely place to get a counterfeit handed off to you, is a bank. I have personally known many bank tellers in my day and they all have said that if they get caught with a counterfeit in their drawer they have to pay for it. So if they spot one in their drawer, it goes right out to the next customer.

99.8% of my experience in asking for halves has been easy. There was NO ONE else in the bank. And they couldn't wait to hand them over to me and said they'd been sitting there for YEARS ! (customer wrapped rolls) And NONE of their customers have ever wanted them......... THEY'RE HAPPY TO HAND THEM OVER TO GET RID OF THEM AND I'm HAPPY TO TAKE THEM ! Now, if they've had to "order" Fed Res. boxes.........and I come in there and ask to buy them.........yeah..... I see yer point. I'm not a member of their bank......why should they ? (even though they almost always did though) And the bank in question here "did" have Fed rolls ........so I take your point very well with a better light on it now. It just seem "un-natural" to me somehow though still ! But there's no more banks (i don't think) for me to search now, so I get to begin the "ordering process" from my main branch soon. I'm done with all that "silver-running" now anyway and i'll just be working with my banks. We have 3 in town and 3 in outlying areas.......good enough. There's nowhere I haven't checked for silver now !

I am the person doing the nickel project. I purchase two (sometimes more) boxes of nickels every day. I have an account at only one bank, and the best thing about that bank is that they have over 30 branches close by. Therefore, I really don't get to the point of annoying the people at any one branch by overloading them with nickels (and pennies and halves, which I also go through. As far as getting coins from branches where I don't have an account I guess that I am lucky; very few of the banks around here have asked if I have an account, and the ones that do I leave alone. There are still plenty of banks for me to go to!
