Hello all, I finally got sucked into the coin roll hunting. I have been procrastinating for about the two months I have been lurking on this board. I was thinking, what could possibly be exciting/fun about looking through thousands of rolled coins?!?!?!? You will be surprised what I learned. I picked up a box of cents and nickels, my plan is to build a set of LMS and Jefferson nickels from circulation (excluding proofs of course). I made it through the cents this evening my haul: 3 Canadian Cents 4 Wheaties 1 Proof (1968 S) What do you think of that haul? To me I think it is kind of low, I was expecting more wheat cents. Second, the box I got was a card board box that said "25.00 Pennies", and the rolls were wrapped in plastic, not paper. Is this the same type of box that all of you search when you roll hunt? Your feedback would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Lastly, I must say, I have focused so much on not getting ripped off, getting the best deal etc. every time I went to a coin shop/show. I must say that just going through all of these cents was liberating in a way, I was just going through them and building the set based strictly on eye appeal, and not worried about how much they were worth etc. (they were a cent each after all). Anyway, it was fun to go through all these cents. That is pretty much it. Oh yeah, I disproved my mom's theory that I have ADD because I made it through this box in two sessions, for about 2 - 3 hours each session. If that isn't focus I don't know what is! Onward, I pick up my first box of halves on Monday, wish me luck! morgantype

This cent looks like it is in great condition. I will try and scan or take picture and post.
It looks proof to me.

What you find in each box can vary greatly! Some boxes you really feel like you've wasted your time while some others are "Dream boxes" with lots of neat stuff in them. I'd say my average number of wheaties per box is about 7. There are other things to look for also like Cuds, double dies, off center strikes, small& large dates on certain years and many others. Also, if you can afford to set the copper cents from 1959-1982 aside long enough to sell $50 worth of them on ebay you can expect between $75-$100 for them.

My "finds" in boxes of cents varies greatly. One box had over 50 wheats. Best ever. Several boxes have had 0 zero wheats. A month ago I bought 4 boxes of cents at two different banks. all 4 boxes had cents dated 1982 and later. These were regular bank rolled, etc. A few years ago I think I averaged about5-10 wheats per box. Now it seems to be about 2-5. So as others have pointed your, your results will vary. You just never know what you will find.

Oh, and it is a labor of love. You will not get rich doing this. I do it for the pure enjoyment.

If you can try to get the paper "customer wrap's", seems to produce better than bank rolled plastic wrap's. I have been averaging about three to five wheats per box, and I have never found a steel cent in circulation. Not yet anyway. Seem t find alot of foreign coin's, to bad I don't really collect those, they just end up in the foreign jar.

That does sound a bit low on both the Wheat cents and the Canadian cents. I usually get about an avergage of 11 wheats per $25 box and 9-10 Canadian cents per $25 box. It might just be an anomaly or you might be competing with other penny searchers in your area that are doing this on a large scale. I know of one guy in Michigan that is hoarding these pennies for copper to the tune of 100K copper cents put away per month, while another in Illinois is about to hit his 3 millionith copper cent saved.

The great thing about pennies is, there is a ton of them. No one person can get them all. But I'm going to try.

Yeah youre not kidding. For the guy doing 100K in pennies a month, that's $1000 saved in pennies per month. Alot of people dont make enough to save that kind of money per month. For the guy with 3 million, that's $30K in pennies which is also more than most people have.

If all doesn't go as predicted, and copper doesn't go sky high, at least there saving more money than they otherwise would have. That's the way I look at it.
