I had already made three trips to this one bank. The first trip they said they had over $1,000.00 in Fed. Res. halves. So, each trip I'd get a few......keep in mind I never took them back to them once searched. So, the second trip and the third trip.......no problems. Well the other day I went back for some more ($200.00 or so each time) (this time I wanted $500.00 worth) and the lady smiled and said "sure".... she left and then came back and asked me if I was a member of their bank. I said no, then she said ...."okay, then there is a $10.00 coin charge if you want any halves." I said "what ?" but there wasn't a "coin charge" yesterday or a few days before that or the time before that ! She said sorry and that maybe it was something new....... Well, frustrated I said well, how much would the coin charge be if I just got $100.00 worth ? She said it would STILL be $10.00 ! So I said forget it and just left ! What if I wanted a roll of dimes ! Or a roll of pennies ? Still a $10.00 "coin charge?" That really steams me !

1) She is just doing her job 2) Banks are not a non-profit business, so you requesting coins takes up time that they could use to help their actual customers 3) They might have assumed early on that you were a customer there, but didnt bother to ask until now
Not trying to sound harsh, but I would expect my bank to do the same so that I am not stuck in line while non-customers are taking up the teller's time. I hope you see where she is coming from and where I am coming from.

I don't think so. That teller is getting paid. They are making no profit whatsoever on this transaction. So the bank is losing/wasting money. I know, we'll total up all this useless salary being paid, and tack it all on to that banks customers' fees. EDITED TO ADD: I do mean only if you are not that bank's customer, not everyone.

It may be policy but sometimes tellers don't even bother asking and just do it. Sounds like you may have gotten someone on a bad day. They can really make life miserable, especially if you don't have an account.

Since you are not an account holder, you are lucky to even be able to get coins from them with a charge. Most banks will not do any transactions with a non account holder. What did you really expect nothing to complain about here...

I always try to make sure that I have an account at both my source bank(s) and dump banks. Most have low minimum balance passbook accounts ($5.00) that are quick and easy to open. I've never been able to get coins at a bank where I didn't have an account. They all ask around here...

I've never been able to get coins at a bank where I didn't have an account. They all ask around here... --- I always go to the same bank so they know me there (been with them for 15 years). They asked once if I was a collector and I told them yes, but assured them I wouldnt dump the coins there. When I took them to other branches to cash in the unwanted coins they didnt even ask if I was a customer. But your idea is good.

Sometimes those banks try to make money since they pay Loomis and federal banks for those coin rolls or fed boxs of coins. It cost money to truck around and to wrap it up. I been luckey this monlth after buying over 12000 dollars worth fedboxs or special ordors no charges on me for buying it all. I been luckey disposing of all it in banks with coins counting machices with no charges so far.
If you have problems with tellers wanting charge you. Just pay 50 bucks and open up an account with bank like I do. It will get free services after that . It will pay for self on you first big money dump if they charge 7.5 or 9 % . Thats around 75 or 90 bucks per thousand dollars worth half dollars if your not member of bank. I dump into machices and dont ask for dime back . I go to next bank pull money out if I need it.
The other tricks on avoiding charges are is dont buy all stuff at one bank. Buy an little there and little at next branch and so on. In two hours last friday I hit 10 banks in my town and went home with 10 boxs of nickels, 10 boxs of pennys, 1 box quarters, 2 boxs of halfs from hitting all those banks.
My coin roll hunting I had to open up 5 banks accounts with companys to keep buying and selling coins over and over again.
On money dumps spread it around and dont dump it all into same place to stay off the radar. Dont dump at banks where you buy special ordors on half dollars or anything. Pay for all that using paper money. On halfs or other coins dont buy those and dump into an diffant branch of same banking company. Dispose of them into next company. Study the banks and find an system that will work for you to stay off the radar.

That's junk. I somewhat understand if you aren't a member though I don't agree with banks being this way. People make banks, banks don't make people.

Or if you want to be vindictive, open whatever free account you can open, and then don't hesitate to use that bank to ONLY dump the coins that you get from other banks. Everytime you bring in $1000 worth of coin, tell them you want $.50 put into your account and the rest in cash.

I agree that it is ridiculous to charge fees for getting coins from your own bank, if you have an account. After all it's your money and you should be able to withdraw it however you wish. Now if you are getting coins from a bank in which you don't have an account and they want to charge you, well, I don't think you can get too upset.
Solution: Like others said, open a small account at more than one bank, if you can do so without getting hit with the low account maintenance fees. I still haven't gotten a second account anywhere but think with all the roll hunting I do, it is a good idea. It also opens up more banks to you for getting rolls or dumping rolls and you shouldn't get charged service fees for either side if you have an account.
In general though, I do think banks have gotten way out of hand with fees. Their overhead costs have tumbled because fewer tellers to pay (ATM/electronic transactions handle most of the work now!). Meanwhile bank interest rates on savings and checking accounts have hit all-time lows (mine is 0.1% interest- I earn a whopping 10 cents a month!) and stayed low even when interest rates had climbed. Meanwhile they kept auto loan, home equity loan and other borrower rates high- spread between savings and loan rates are so far apart now- they used to only be 1% or so apart. They charge $1-4 for an ATM transaction if you are not an account holder. Until 6 months ago, I got my Cashier's check and traveler's checks for free. No more! I get so agitated seeing all the low account balance maintenance fees. I've lost so much money over the years to low account balance. I feel it is my money, even if I only have $100 in there, they should be taking $15 out a month just because someone is poor and doesn't have a lot of money. Banks have gotten out of control with their fees and interest rate spreads.
Why? To give them the biggest profits to keep shareholders happy. Banks used to be so much more about customer service and making people happy.

Where I live there is a lot of competition among the financial institutions. For the most part they are more than happy to ditch the halves. They are a pain for them. I've only been grumped at for not being one of their customers maybe four times. The one even allowed me to get halves but less than I wanted. I belong to a credit union and things are a lot less of a hassle. I also have a bank savings account because I got halves there and the teller told me if I ever wanted to get rid of some they would take them as they had a customer that wanted them. I brought $500 worth and they took two tellers to hand count them. The head teller was livid. I ended up with a savings account. I now can go to that bank all over my state and get halves. The main office for the bank is in my city and I have a place to dump. Small town banks have been a good place to go for me. Not large quantities though. I'm not driving around to play games with my own bank. I dumb at the main office, if they want to get testy I'll just find another bank.

People that want to play the I collect coin game with a bank usually has no idea of how they effect that bank. If, for instance in a large city and lots of customers, a line may form for tellers. Then a person walks up and wants some halves. Usually those are in the main vault so the teller must lock up everything, go to the main vault, leave the amount in another denomination, fill out a form, return to their station, unlock everything. Now just look at the people in line. Not a lot of happy campers there. And all for your rolls of halves ane you don't even have an account there. I've been in those lines. I don't like things like that at all. I usually get from 2 to 10 rolls of halves but never when they are busy and I make sure I have an account in several banks for just that reason. If they charge anyone for that inconvience to others I feel they should double the fees. From someone in a hurry and people wasting a tellers time.
