Not to be a sore loser, but I fail to understand. Is this a regular Roanoke Half Dollar? Why so much? Is it a special variety? You can get an MS65 certified by PCGS for $180. What is special about this one that I missed?

This coin is part group of a niche collectors for low ball commemoratives. It is a point of pride with low ball collectors to have a coin with the most honest wear and not be damaged so they will often pay more to be able to say they have the lowest certified coin.
I do something similar with my 3 cent nickels - I focus on fine to extra fine (once in a while I may breakdown and get an AU).

Some commentary on the R2 coin ... I appreciate that many of you ... by your guesses ... have understood the market value of honest circulated coins ... in particular the classic silver commemorative series. That tells me that perhaps my efforts at CCF education have been useful. Quote: but I fail to understand. Is this a regular Roanoke Half Dollar? Why so much? The coin is a treasured member of a rare collection ... honestly circulated classic silver commemorative that can be certified by a TPG 1937 Roanoke Island Half Dollar - PCGS G06 This truly treasured coin is PCGS Pop 1/1 ... with a single AG03 example out there somewhere. Enjoy - David
