Thanks. This series is the perfect example - I have put it together 3 times in the past 15 years and, bottom line, lost money on re-sale on the first two sets. Had I just shot for top notes to begin with, I would have saved the losses and had this set for much less than I paid for it.  |

What am I missing? I went to the bay just to see if I could find the 5 and I found several. Why are you saying it is the hardest?

Thanks, you have had better luck than I have. I am simply saying that the $5 is the most difficult of the three in Gem PQ by a major service. In circulated grades, they are all common. If you have links to the $5 in PCGS/PMC 65PQ at $500 or less, believe me I am interested. Edited by Coinfrog

The stars are around, but you're talking serious money in gem grades. I think I'd rather own a few '02 Red Seal NBNs or something else that hits you over the head instead.

By way of history, from what I understand, most GIs had their pay sent home during WWII, so there was not a great demand for these notes at the time. They were not authorized for use domestically after the war, but eventually that restriction was lifted. I would often find them as a kid.
Our wallets were full of notes with all kinds of colors back then - red, brown, yellow, green and blue. We didn't give it a second thought (unfortunately).

I do enjoy seeing all these colors when I flip through my $1 note Dansco. Makes me smile. I really wish we had more color in U.S. notes, especially after dabbling in world currency. I know we're getting there with the modern issues but the multi-colored seals were a nice splash of color and I think those look sharp. |

Nice! I am currently missing just the $5 yellow seal for my North Africa set as well. Not only is the $5 note scarcer but a bit more pricey as well... Same goes for the Hawaii series, although I have the 1,5,10,and 20 Hawaii notes, The $5 is in the least bit of good condition.

Ok, now that I think about it, do you have any advice for aspiring collectors of this series (such as myself (ahem))? I have already seen "don't skimp, buy the best you can afford" earlier in the thread, which I'm on board with. Start with $1, move on to $10, pray for $5? Buy graded only? ebay, auction houses, LCS, coin shows? Thanks! |
