Fun question. I have to break it down into 2 parts : my first gold coin was a 1922-P Double Eagle, purchased for $58 in 1971 (sold 8 yrs later for $800) ... were I to spend the allotted $1200 today for my (who knows, exactly, xxxth gold coin) I can't say for sure because I'd have to see the piece first ; you can get a really super 1926 Sesquicentennial Quarter Eagle in 64 and have $400 left (or an ugly one for the same price/grade); maybe a striking P/L 1903 McKinley or Jefferson in 63PL for abt the $1200 ... or if you are of a mindset that gold prices will increase a nice one ounce unit like a Buffalo or Saint modern piece.
IF I were to sway off the beaten path, and purchase a gold coin, I love the Reverse Proof Gold Buffalo I believe Many of the Gold coins posted are sweeter than the next too.......... JMO
