Trying to decide on which particular 2012 Eagle to get. I'm putting together a set, but this year seems to be one of the tougher ones with several varieties and prices all over the map.
I'm keeping the set at ms69. So keep that in mind when sharing your thoughts. Proofs, burnished, san fran, etc etc.
Tell me what you think numistas!

So you just want one ASE from 2012 for your set? From purely a favorite coin perspective, I would suggest the reverse proof from the SF set. I can't help you with the MS/PF grades and costs thereof since I don't collect that way. I'm sure you'll be happy with whichever ASE you choose.

It depends on what your set is all about. If you are collecting bullion ASE's then stick with that. If you are collecting yearly proofs stick with them. W's... the same. I look at a "set" as a group of similar coins...same finish, same mint mark (or not)...one from each year. I would not label only one random bullion, W's, S's, RP, EF, from each year as a set but rather a bunch of different ASE's Maybe start a set of W's...then a set of bullion, then RP's, then S mint marked coins, then Enhanced Finish...THOSE are "sets" Then there are actual sets put out by the Mint that could be sub sets of your group...San Fran, 20th-25th Annie, West Point etc.

What you just said... Is what I'm up against. lol I guess now that you put it in those words. I kinda want all of those sets. Am I crazy?!? The first one I am going to hunt is the Rev proof Celtic mentioned. But honestly, since I've seen that coin it was a given! It would be in my set. So I guess my real question is what beyond that one. I'm really just trying to shop the market and assemble these coins as cheap as possible. And as far as what set comes first. I would imagine it will be the easiest and cheapest. But it doesn't have to follow that standard protocol.

The ASEs are the only post-1964 coins I collect.
I go with NGC only in 69 and 70. I have my nine pocket pages set up with the ones I'm missing left open so I can see what I'm missing. I collect by date with all the different mintings together for the same year. First my Ms, then the PF, then the others, such as reverse proof.

I suggest buying the anniversary sets NOW if you have the $ and here's why... 2016 is the 30th anniversary of the ASE's and it hasn't been released yet as to what type of special set they may offer (aside from the new proof design) which means, once they release the info on the 30th anniversary set, assuming they're doing one which is a safe bet, the price of the previous anniversary sets (2006, 2011.. 1995 doesn't count) will most likey go up.... so I say buy the anniversary sets asap

Quote: I kinda want all of those sets. Am I crazy?!? If you are, then I am too. I personally don't buy ASE's in slabs as I prefer the original mint packaging and they general cost less too. The sets in original mint packaging can be kind of hard as the more coins there are in a set, the more likely it is that at least one coin will have a problem. I have all the sets at this point except the 2011 set which has five coins. I've looked at quite a few, but there always seems to be one coin that has a problem. But, that's part of the fun. I'll eventually find a good set and throw down the money.

This one is really jumping out at me... www.ebay.com/itm/2012-S-San-Fran-75th-Anniv-2-pc-NGC-PF69-ER-Silver-Eagle-Proof-SET-with-Reverse-/331774585021?hash=item4d3f4e68bd:g:lb0AAOSwHnFVy4FJ

I'd definitely advise not to pay a premium for "Early Releases" or "First Day of Issue", etc. Those coins were made in very large batches before they were shipped. The first one shipped wasn't at all necessarily the first one minted. Being "early" or "first" also does not equate to the quality of the strike.

My tactic for amassing a silver eagle collection would be to get the 2012 and 2013 sets now. Then I'd start stalking good deals on burnished ASE. You can't go wrong putting together a 2006-08 and 2011-15 W burnished set. After that I'd tackle the 2006 and 2011 sets that are going to be more spendy. When I got all that I'd start buying my standard proof issues, then bullion issues.

The 2011 set will definitely set you back. I thought you were just looking for one representative ASE from 2012 from your OP?

Quote:I thought you were just looking for one representative ASE from 2012 from your OP? Probably my fault for my "set" comments ..and Quote: Being "early" or "first" also does not equate to the quality of the strike. Correct but it might affect the quality of the selling price. Whatever group makes up the set it should be consistent...either ALL in Mint packaging, all raw, all regular MS/PF 69's or all ER MS/PF 69's

I was intentionally. But you guys made me rethink my process. I got a good start on things today! They are stunning! And I'm new but I can't find the flaws yet. Poor pics because I was so excited to share! lol More on the way. W - PF will be here Monday. And Burnished will be ordered by tomorrow night.
