From the pics, the face, neck and field look a little scratched, but when I got the coin, and a good look, I didn't see the scratches the way they look in the pic. Is this common on Morgans, to photograph that way? Probably not MS 64 like on the home graders slab, but where might this one fall? It has the luster and cartwheel, but possibly a weak strike? Note the nice toning around the entire edge.

Surfaces worry me a bit - there seem to be a lot of fine scratches which often indicated a coin was wiped with a cloth. To be on the safe side, I will say UNC details, cleaned.
Rest in Peace

I'm thinking lightly circulated based on all the chatter in the fields. AU58.

No signs of wear on the "triforce" up front (cheek, hair, cap) -- eagle's wing tips do not show signs of wear
MS62 and a poor strike.

I just realized that I titled my post 1891 P. Sorry about that. But since the is a grading board, I suppose it doesn't really matter much.

Thanks, Paralyse, for the most generous grade, however, if you are right, then I have a $6,000 coin.
If it was lightly rubbed with a cloth at one time and created hairlines, would that preclude it from being graded?

Hi Moxking, you are right about the breast feathers. I did some reading about the 1901 P, and it is a notoriously understruck coin. Maybe an old/late reverse die hit. Especially if Paralyse is right and the "triforce" looks sharp.

I think an AU 58 might be more realistic, based on the "chatter", but the thing is, this one just has that eye appeal going for it. And if it has been wiped with a cloth at some point, it wasn't very much. If it grades AU 58, it's still about a $1K coin, and I would be good with that.

Thanks all for the replies!! This is a great forum and I'm sure will help me with grading, and not loosing my shirt.

Difficult to say looking at the coin through the plastic, but I would go along with at least AU-58.

I lean toward 58 and cleaned. Tough call from these pics.
