I think those are too big for Rockwell hardness test marks. BB gun at 3 paces? 2 paces?

Maybe a bb gun, the dents look about the size of a bb.

I would agree with possible BB gun incident. I would have to wonder what type of person would do that to poor Abe

The width and depth seem proportionate to a BB strike. Any impact bulge showing on the reverse? Thanks, Doug.

It could very well be a BB. I would expect an "anvil effect" on the reverse, which is a bit of a raised area opposite the indentations. Near the end of the paper (online version) I recently wrote about Rockwell Test Marks, I included a diagram of a BB indentation compared to a Rockwell Indentation here: http://conecaonline.org/content/Roc...essTest.htmlA Rockwell mark would be smaller and smoother and not have a pressure ridge as can be seen (faintly) around the edge of a portion of these indentations.

I will do my best to get a photo of the reverse. I do recall that there was no anvil effect or bulge on the back.
Great article Pete2226! thanks for sharing.

Interesting reason for that type of damage. I enjoyed the article very much, too.

Probably the reverse is dimpled outwards on those areas?

Interesting thread, learnt a lot with the article posted. One thing however is bugging me, why were the tested coins not discarded after the test, as a second?

Quote: why were the tested coins not discarded after the test, In my research on Rockwell Testing, it appears that the tested coins were supposed to be discarded. However, it is thought that a very few made it into production.
