I was looking through some coins I've had for years when I saw this.

It looks like the top of the building is floating above the rest of the building. What do you think?

That is caused by excessive die abrading/polishing removing some of the finer detail of the Memorial. It can happen on many different coin designs, note the "broken nose" on this Mercury Dime-

Yogisd1, I'm going out on a limb. Is the cent a 1969, 1970 or other? Thanks, Doug.

There are a lot of coins that were over polished and missing a lot of mid details:

Here's a Bugs Bunny half with some evidence of die polishing in front of Ben's eye and on his jacket near the date.

Here is an overlay for the Franklin to see what affected that area:

to the forum Yogisd1. Everything that is raised on your coin is recessed on the die that struck it. The supports that are supposed to be under the roof no longer appear on your coin because on the die the area around them was polished away prior to striking your coin. Your coin is an Over-polished Die Error coin. It is commonly referred to as a "Floating Roof" and carries a small premium.

Halo1st, as a matter of fact it is a 1970 S large date. Thanks everyone for the replies.

I agree with die polishing. Common on 60s-80s copper cents.

The reason I brought that up is 1969 and 1970 cents seem to be the two years most noted for the raised roof. Thanks, Doug.

Maybe it was the same polisher.
