Dang! I think you're right. That's the clean one too so, if this is the coin with the details grade, that means the cent with verdigris came out clean so that's pretty amazing. Hindsight is 20/20 though, these are the first coins I've ever submitted so I had no idea what would earn a details grade or not. Do you think that scratch would tone down in time in the NGC holder or should I crack it and put it on the window sill?

I can't believe a scratch that small got a "details". I see way bigger scratches considered bag marks/problem free.

Slabs are pretty airtight contrary to some peoples thoughts. I don't think it will retone in the holder for decades. I would sell the as-is, in the holder to recoup some of your costs. With something that minor, I think you'll get $$$ close to what a problem-free coin would get. At least it's genuine!

Okay, so before pics first just so you don't have to scroll up and down and all that...

Number #1 as it came out of the greasy black zip lock baggie...

Number #2 as it came out of the greasy black zip lock baggie...

The advice I received from BadThad was to send them into NCS for conservation and then onto to NGC for grading. One came back as an AU55BN and the other came back as AU Details Reverse Scratched. Looking back at pics we were unfortunately wrong about the location of the scratch but, more unfortunately, we chose the correct cent which was the sharper of the two (Number 1 above). The scratch itself is old and toned evenly with the rest of the coin. But look at that luster and toning!

And then the gem. Not only did remove every trace of verdigris from number 2 (slight hint of staining in the worst areas), but they revealed great luster and what is now the most beautifully toned coin that I own...

I can look WAY beyond the weaker strike on this coin over the other the more I look at it. I was fully planning on cracking this thing out to put into the Dansco where it belongs but this holder is really growing on me and the protection it will offer over the years will probably be invaluable. The only decision I have to make now is what to do with the other. It is a details coin but the scratch is evenly toned and shallow. Pictures make it look worse than it is really. If I am going to sell it should I just put it on ebay with my dismal selling history (none of which are coins) or should I try Great Collections or another auction house? Maybe put it up for sell here if I am able?

Thanks for coming along with me guys! This has been an enormous learning experience in TPGs and I will give NCS a million upvotes for the quality conservation work they did on these two coins. And now... dancing fruit dance!

I think you should. You can set the price and then you really have nothing to lose.

The coins look very good.
Do you ask the preservation service before slabbing them?

mdrosophilia I did. On the form I specified both for conservation at $30 a piece. My understanding is they will only do a conservation if it is deemed necessary or worthwhile. If they don't, they don't charge the $30. They did remove verdigris spots on the first one but beyond that and the glaring verdigris on the second one, I'm not entirely sure what else they do to them. Maybe others know?

The scratch is not big enough to warrant an AU details grade. Maybe you could try to resubmit to PCGS,NGC, and ANACS. Even SEGS or PCI. Get a AU50 without detail is huge here.

NGC is more tolerant to the scratch. They do net grade.
