Why was use the use of gold in trade payments ended? World War I and the Great Depression. Most countries on a gold standard abandoned it during those time frames.

Gold has unique qualities that other metals don't have such as its ability to be hammered so thin that it can be used as a coating for many things that are used in tiny electronics and computer tech. When something is gold plated the gold sheeting can be incredibly fine as in gold leaf for books and other objects. It really is a unique metal. It can sit at the bottom of the ocean for 1000 years and not rust. It could be encrusted but it will not just rust away. I know that EPA devices used to detect pollution levels in cars use either gold or platinum in small amounts. This is why people steal or salvage these devices from junk cars or stolen cars etc. I think there is an almost finite amount of gold in the earth. I was reading that only a few current gold mining operations are even profitable these days. It takes a lot of energy and water to get gold out of the earth.
