Ike is not the last silver big dollar. Peace dollar is. To wake it up, I wonder the Peace dollar series has to wake up before the IKE. It is not likely as silver dollar is all about Morgans. There are so many BU example of Morgan and they are cheap and available. Why IKE and peace if you have Morgan. Just ask myself.

You can't compare morgans to peace or morgans and peace to ikes. They are all massively different animals. Morgans and peace have similarities sure but are miles apart and ikes compared to them are oceans apart

Honestly I truly really like all 3.. so this is not a answer of hate, but I honestly think the morgans are cool but really there is no wow factor to them.. I have seen awesome morgans and again I do like them a lot, and am close to finishing a set.. but they are truly not the prettiest dollar out there IMHO

I don't think that the Ike dollars are going to be a hot collection any time soon. I really like the Ike dollar and I have several sets but that is me and I think it's a coin you either really like or you could not care less about.

But, I believe it would take only a very small uptick in demand to have a massive effect on price. All it would take is a few thousand new collectors while a several thousand existing collectors are working on upgrading and the mint sets could almost evaporate overnight. Look for it on the 1975 set first and the '73 will be hard on its heels. People don't understand that in our consumer economy mint sets are just another consumable. We pretty much live hand to mouth on all the dates and expect "just in time delivery". It's been like this for decades and there's no longer the massive number of sets with the original buyers that there used to be. Higher prices would not immediately bring many of the surviving sets to market since the owners are often not very active in the hobby. Even higher prices would result in the few remaining sets dribbling into the market.

I do not like pop the bubble. The mint set could be broken up but the coins in the mint set will surly rarely go to circulation. They will still be in the hand of collectors. They just move the home from one to another. The total amount is barely changing year after year. It is stable just the wheat cents. Wheat cents is stable because people pull them out when they see them. So price of wheat cents will stay 3-5 cents for a very long time maybe 50 years. If the wheat cents are allowed to circulation, then the attrition is huge and price will continue to go up. This is the reason when 100 millions made for early wheat, they are still worth hundreds of dollar in nice MS63 and up conditions. It would never happens to not circulating coins like Morgan, Peace and our beloved Ike dollar.

When mint sets are broken up there is a tendency for the coins to be "dispersed". Yes, sometimes this means they'll end up in collections but just as often they end up in the cash register. Many mint set coins aren't good enough quality to wholesale as BU and most of thee do end up in circulation. But more importantly is that many of the collections are very primitive. People buy these for pennies and then they just get pushed into folders. Attrition on the coins out of the packaging may be nearly as high as the coins in the packaging.
You can't treat coins so casually for decades and then expect them to be around if demand ever shows up.

One ... You can't compare wheat cents to Ike dollars, there is difference on so many levels, it would take forever to list them. As others are saying here, finding MS 65 business strike Ike's in the wild is getting harder and harder to find. Not only were they not struck well, they are a big coin that do not take hits very well. There was a period where Ike's were heavily use at casinos. I have been working at two local coin shops for over five years. For the past three years I have been checking most every 73 to 78 mint sets that come in. If they have nicer looking Ike's I pick them up. The percentage of mint sets with nice Ike's is very low. Not just poor strikes, many have not been stored very well. Right now I have about 700 Ike's. Two complete Dansco, some graded slabs, blue, brown Ike's and a good amount of rolls. When I bring home more Ike's I go through the rolls and try to keep the better coins. The dates I have the hardest time finding in better grades are 1976 type one 1971 P an D 1972 P and D Edit - of course Ike's are not in the 71 and 72 sets. We do see a lot of raw Ike's come in, when collections are getting dumped

I agree with GoldRush... In my honest opinion, IKEs are going to be one of the biggest and most popular modern sets to come... Three or four years ago, you had a very good chance of finding some gems in this set in the wild... But it has been harder and harder to find... But there are still a lot of mint sets held in private hands that are going to come to the market in the next few years as the collectors pass on and their families sell off collections... There are still great coins out there to find in this set!

It's interesting how split the opinions are on this series..
I'll have to keep my eye out for some early mint sets.
