That Romanov dynasty coin is amazing. Not so much the coin itself as the tragedy that was to unfold shortly after that coin was issued.
They were celebrating a 300 year old dynasty and within 5 years the entire Romanov family had been deposed and murdered.

This Czechoslovakian 5 haleru from 1923 - which, among many other 1923 coins, I previously posted in the second edition of How Far Back Can We Go (I think I've missed that date in the third edition) - is one of the (unfortunately many) coin types that I had at some point considered the most beautiful coin design ever. Sadly I do not have photos of coins with any of the other designs that got such praise from me; most of them are also from the 20th century.  Yes, it has an obvious ugly scratch. No, I don't actually remember why, sorry.
