Here's one from southern India: Raja Raja Chola I 985-1014 This coin is commonly known as the "octopus man" coin, but actually depicts Chola seated on a throne. This overall design stuck in India and Sri Lanka for a few centuries, as evidenced by a very similar coin posted (I think by Petrus?) a couple weeks back.

Great coins everyone! @flippy, it appears as though we have matching pennies from Aethered II. I wonder how you got a date of 991-997 AD--my copy of Spink says that he ruled between 9178 and 1016 AD. Maybe some new information has come to light? Please let me know if I have a mistake with my dating. Lastly, here is another coin from the 10th Century. It is the oldest German coin I own. This denar was minted in Cologne between 936 and 962 AD. Obv inscription is S COLONIA A and rev inscription is ODDO IMP AUGS. The attribution is Bonhoff 1542 and Kluge 292.

@spence, North lists the CRUX type as 991-997. I dont know if it is correct but that is what I base it off.

@flippy, ok thanks for the lead on this. Do you have an attribution number for North? I'd like to cross-check the North reference with the Spink reference. thanks!

@spence, I believe your coin is catalogued under N.770. The portrait corresponds to figure 2 in the "Notes in CRUX Type Pennies" Bust left with sceptre. There are 7 main types illustrated.

Here is one last coin from the 900s--I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's 9th Century coins starting tomorrow. This is a Denar from the German city state of Goslar. It is undated, but was minted between 983 and 1002 AD. The attribution is Bonhoff 294. Obv inscription is +ADELHEIT and O/D/D/O while the rev inscription is DEI GRATIA. Not a lot of detail left peripherally I know.

Ok, on to the 800s. Here is a Denier from Melle France made under Charles the Bald. It is not dated, but comes from 840 to 870 AD. The obv inscription is +METxVLLO and the rev inscription is +CARLVS REX FR. Grierson goes into some detail about the reasoning behind the letter x in the obv inscription as it represents a break from prior inscriptions. He posits that it is not the case of distinguishing between Royal and Feudal issues (as has been the theory for some centuries), but rather an indication of minting at the newly acquired mint at Poitiers. His reasoning is based upon a hoard finding of mules that have the inscription with the x on one side and +PICTAVI CIV (indicating Poitiers) on the other side. Attributions include Roberts 982, Grierson 948, MG 1064, and Prov 699. Also, just in case you were wondering about that "bald" stuff, here is what Wikipedia says: Quote: It has been suggested that Charles' nickname was used ironically and not descriptively; i.e. that he was not in fact bald, but rather that he was extremely hairy.[6] An alternative or additional interpretation is based on Charles' initial lack of a regnum. "Bald" would in this case be a tongue-in-cheek reference to his landlessness, at an age where his brothers already had been sub-kings for some years.[7]

@flippy, not sure if you are aware, but in the thread below, we are looking for coins minted between 890 and 899. You Edwardian penny posted above (S-1087) just barely meets the inclusion criteria for this decade. It would be super-cool if you could cross-post your coin over there and help us to move back another decade. Thanks! https://goccf.com/t/195985&whichpage=1
