Quote: American Large Cent, I only have the one example but what a nicely proportioned coin they are... I personally prefer the proportions of the Petite Head sub-type (this 1841 cent is, sadly, the only example of this brief design that I have).

Some awfully pretty coins for the 19th century so far! I have several to post, but I'll start off with a favorite: Jersey, 1/13 of a shilling 1870 Up until the 1840s, the channel islands (particularly Guernsey and Jersey) had no official currency, and used both British and French coins, but primarily the latter. A declaration was made in about 1838 that all inhabitants of the islands had to use British currency. At the time, there were 26 sous to the British shilling, compared to 24 British halfpence. Rather than just force everyone to exchange, new bronze coins were issued to trade 1:1 with the old French coins. Thus, despite being struck on exactly the same planchets as British pennies, these coins were only worth 12/13ths as much. This nightmare carried on until the mid 1870s, when the thirteenth shilling was abolished and replaced with the twelfth shilling, which would be used until Decimal Day in 1970.
