snowman Pillar of the Community United States 1840 Posts	Posted 02/19/2008 7:09 pm At first I thought it was after mint damage, but after a closer look decided that isn't the case. The die crack along the G in Hong and the deposit near the rim at 2 o'clock are particularly interesting. I have lots of error coins in my darkside collection, but have never seen anything this extensive. Does anyone know how common an error like this is? The area around 2 oclock and between the petals look like pitting from a rusted die. Don't understand the chip on the petal since this is an incuse area and not usually subject to such a large chip. There are striations on the outside of the rim (which I can't capture on my scanner). They almost look like a very fine reeding. Unfortunately, I don't have another one of these for comparison. KurtS Pillar of the Community United States 5318 Posts	Posted 02/20/2008 12:48 pm Now that you posted detailed shots, my impression is that surface is cast vs. struck. There is a granularity to the surface that I've seen in other cast pieces, and those defects look like metal that has bubbled into a cavity. If it's fake, that sure would be interesting because I'd wager it was intended for domestic circulation vs. collectors. For an interesting comparison, I found a circulated $2 HK off ebay that appears to be struck. The surface and depth of relief are notably different.
