Hi!

I found a strange 1948 wheat head penny with an even stranger indent on the back. What happened? What's this called?

Could be a struck through error which would be much nicer than a lamination error.
Rest in Peace

Looks like it was originally a rectangular piece before the ends got bent over and it was struck through.

I am no pro, but it looks to clean to be a lamination.

Is it a lamination that occurred on the coin right before it was minted, pulling up the metal and flipping over the lamination onto another part of the coin?

Anyways, very nice coin!

It was either dropped or it jumped.

Since the points at the base of the trapezoid meet the rim, this is most likely the impression of a folded-over and struck-in clamshell (semilunar) lamination flap. Evidently the convex outer portion of the flap broke off before the whole thing folded over. If the coin is slightly underweight, this would add additional evidence in favor of this interpretation.
Error coin writer and researcher.

I think that means it was delaminating before it was struck.
