Hi! I found a strange 1948 wheat head penny with an even stranger indent on the back. What happened? What's this called?

Lamination my first thought but when John said, Quote: Give it a bit and a pro will chime in. I'm no pro. Lets see who John called in.

Could be a struck through error which would be much nicer than a lamination error.

Looks like it was originally a rectangular piece before the ends got bent over and it was struck through.

I am no pro, but it looks to clean to be a lamination.

Is it a lamination that occurred on the coin right before it was minted, pulling up the metal and flipping over the lamination onto another part of the coin? Anyways, very nice coin!

Is that a dropped D north of UNUM?

It was either dropped or it jumped.

Since the points at the base of the trapezoid meet the rim, this is most likely the impression of a folded-over and struck-in clamshell (semilunar) lamination flap. Evidently the convex outer portion of the flap broke off before the whole thing folded over. If the coin is slightly underweight, this would add additional evidence in favor of this interpretation.

I think that means it was delaminating before it was struck.
