I apologize I am probably posting in the wrong forum, I'm not sure which one I would post this in. I went to the bank yesterday and asked for 20$ in pennies. She handed me a few rolls of new? 1964, 1986, 1973, 1974 a ton of 1980 rolls, as well as mixed rolls of multiple years. My question is...is this strange? Why would there be rolls of 50 year old pennies just now being circulated?

Probably someone passed away/stole a collection and them cashed in to the bank. If they have more, buy the rest of them.

I just picked up a bag yesterday and probably 90% of them are BU. From the late 1990's through 2014. I would like to know the story of them as well. It is just slightly unusual but not unheard of.

I would try to buy the rest, but it's luck of the draw at the bank, I get what I get unfortunately lol. So I know the store across the road from that bank must do their banking there because same thing there, I ask to buy pennies, and I'm getting rolls of old, new pennies at times. I'm noticing also that last week was all 1980, this week seems to be 1986, 2 weeks ago was 1974. Just seems weird..

T-Bop, I have to ask..what would you do with them? Do you open them and look at them for anything interesting? Or just keep them in the roll? I have to say, I definately enjoy looking at the new old pennies more than the old dirty ones, but the "what if I come across a key date" excitement factor is gone with a roll of the same date.

You might come across the "what if" variety or error in a roll. Pretty much guaranteed the coins will be from different dies. I bought several rolls's of BU 62's and very happy with the results of opening them.

It's kind of like gambling. You got to ask yourself "Do I feel lucky?"

j4337 , I don't look through my bu rolls . Most collectors do and they look for errors and varieties . I just hoard them for my grandchildren .

When I get a box of the same date, I search 5 rolls to see what is usually in that run. If I find nothing interesting, I save the rest of the box un-opened and sell them to roll collectors.
