SImply amazing find, and fun story to read. What amazes me is when I was a kid, my grandfather had been searching a lot of nickels weekly for years with his laundromat business. He and I continued to search through them for 15 more years together. He found one 39-D and I never did. So it surprises me anyone can still find them in circulation. Congratulations indeed!

Earle - I'm imagining you searched a very large number of nickels during that stretch. Any guess how many a week you looked at?

For some posterity, here are my three LIFETIME 1939-D nickels found via CRH or in circulation... the first I found as a cashier at a local fast food place.

Indeed! And the scans really don't do it justice in terms of the mint luster. That was from my two famous LOOMIS boxes over last summer (Aug 18-19)... 206 pre-60s out of that batch (94 rolls) including that coin a 1938-D and 1938-S, and 3 Buffalo nickels. Oddest things about that batch were there were no War Nickels and 9 1959 Philly coins - a fairly tough coin to find out here.

Also, note coins 2 and 3 - given the slightly rotated reverses, they appear to be from the same die.

Nice trio.

I agree, the 1939-D of 2016 sets a high standard.

I know this thread is old but I just had to comment. It's June of 2023 an I'm doing the 3 book set for my granddaughters to find someday. I'm down to 9 nickels left all from CRH all our D & S and the 39 D&S are among them. I have found some key dates 50D,55P some War Nickels,2009. So the hunt goes on. I hunt 2 boxes a week when I can get them. Most of the time it's no problem.
