Back door Job 100% There would be 0% chance a Canadian 1941 quarter would be in the San fran mint. I don't understand how someone at the US mint does not go after such obvious miscreants.

If I remember correctly, there was a lot of controversy surrounding some spectacular errors that started appearing on the market several years ago and subsequent investigations revealed who, what when and where. It was a mint employee that was creating these "errors". Money does funny things to people.
I suspect that this coin is probably from that incident.

So the government goes after people with legitimate coins (1933 gold, aluminum cents etc) however they let a coin like this which was made on the sly 100% sit out there with no consequence.

Yes it was made on purpose. There were a lot of "helped" errors coming out of San Francisco in the 1968 - 70 period. There is also a 1970 S quarter known struck on a 1900 Barber quarter. One way they were getting these out of the mint was by dropping them down the hydrolic oil fill tube of the forklifts. The an accomplish in the maintenance dept would recover them while servicing the forklifts. (The maintenance area was outside the secure area.) When they finally discovered how they were being smuggled out they had catch screens installed in the oil fill pipes.

I suggest that Charles M. Larson's book: Numismatic Foregery be read by all to learn how false dies can be made.
Not too hard to find suitable unstruck planchets or for a suitably skilled shedman to make his own.

Quote:Is anyone other then me shocked that a TPG slabs these things? John1 It really is a shame, especially being in a NGC slab. Personally I don't view it as a genuine error, to me It's more of a fantasy piece that was made in someone's garage. I'd give ten fifteen bucks for it as a novelty piece.

As long someone will pay a fortune for this stuff, there will be an incentive to make them. Collectively we should refuse to deal with this material.
