My belated to your appearance in the commemorative forum ... great to have you with us.

Sincere congratulations on the accomplishment so far in pursuing your MS type set ... I enjoyed the photos and salute your efforts.

To your original question of how to acquire the Hawaiian ... I echo commems wise advise ... adding that the absolute best method to purchase any coin is personal observation at a show with the coin in hand.

I would be remiss to not mention that you appear by your selection of MS grade coins to be acquiring your type set at a price point David Bowers called the 'Optimal Collecting Grade' ... the point where the next grade bump results in significant cost increase.

Be mindful that the current price of all classic silver commemorative are at a recent low point ... and I advantaged that as an opportunity to upgrade my MS64/CAC Hawaiian to MS65/CAC ... at a lower price.

Message takeaway here ... welcome ... find the coin in hand ... and be mindful of current market prices versus your budget.

Hopeful for an update when you find 'your' Hawaiian.

David

Everyone thanks again!

I don't have any friends or family members who collect coins so I rarely show my collection due to lack of interest, so showing off a few examples of my commems and getting your replies sure does feel good. I am glad I found this forum. I hear you "nickelsearcher", they are at a low and getting at such a low price point feels great, I don't understand how these are not more popular given their beauty, variety rarity in mintage. I don't know if I will ever progress to Gold Commemoratives, do you hear of others who collect them? I got the opportunity to see a MS64 PanPac octagonal and its a beauty in person.

"iontyre", it is one of my favorites, I have a couple raw examples and one that I feel should be sent in for grading, it looks sharper than my 64, but I see one milk spot that makes me wonder if it has been dipped in the past...

"Half", I love the Norse, I purchased it raw and sent it for grading, I was happy with the 63, I know they are not commemoratives, but I couldn't resist since the vikings/boat theme coins are so fun...I don't understand why this viking seems to be wearing a bra though. lol

I will likely purchase my Hawaiian soon, before the end of the year so I hope I won't be competing with any of you, thanks again for the kudos and advice, and I will update y'all when I get her in hand.

Well, the Norse medals might not be US commemorative coins, but they are most definitely very closely-aligned with the classic US commemorative coin series.

I shared a few thoughts about them here: https://goccf.com/t/120080, you might find the post of some interest.

You have some very nice coins, and it appears that you have done well with your seletions.

When I was shopping for my Hawaiian half dollar, I found that a lot of the pieces in MS-62 or 61 holders were not Mint State at all but just AU coins. Therefore I think that you are looking at finding one in MS-63 or 64.

When I was a dealer I bought a nearly complete collection of commemorative half dollars, all in NGC holders, that was missing only the California. I decided to keep the Hawaiian and sold all of the others. Here it is. NGC graded this piece MS-64.
