I was recently going through my coins and came across this 1978 nickel. Is this an error coin?

The SS letters were punched into the coin after the minting process and is post mint damage (OMD). The coin is damaged and worth face ($. 05).

Commonly known as a 'counterstamped' coin, and all are PMD. Lots of images of them here:

to CCF. Someone stamped those marks on your coin. As mentioned before this is known as a counterstamp. No added value to the coin. It is spendable.

It's worth mentioning that some people collect counter-stamps. Even if it doesn't have added value to the coin; if it's something you'd like to collect- go for it!

Rest in Peace
