Not me either..... even the starting bid would wipe out my monthly coin budget for longer than I could do without but aside from financial reality, I'd be very motivated. It's the continuous learning of the historical factors involving coin collecting that keep me interested. So even though this item is not the real thing, it illustrates by a visual link how close Canada came to releasing a Silver Dollar in 1911. And in my opinion, the story behind it is far more interesting than a high value coin who's entire past is a total mystery other than it was made by the mint.

I thought I would kick this back up. Just a few days to go....now at $13,000 on line. I think I voted $30 to 50k, so there is still a ways to go for me to be right....but I still think it could get there.

Amazing! Maybe the Canadian coin market is heating up. Guess the guy who bought this out of DNW is doing a gigantic happy dance! This is one of those times I love being wrong. Was positive this piece would not make reserve. Crunch , crunch, darn I hate the taste of Crow! LOL.

Sold for $14,000 plus $2,800 buyers premium and tax.
Between $15,000 - $20,000: 4 Voters or 10% got it right.

The whole auction was pretty interesting to watch... unfortunately I am out of the coin buying game for awhile... gotta let the VISA cool off right now.

Yes, it was interesting, although I only watched parts. But it seemed most of the closing bids were at or within estimate and that's always a good sign especially mid summer. I didn't buy anything either, I'm still at a point of deciding what's my next focus going to be while I dibble-dabble here and there. Earlier this month a bought a $2-$100 uncirculated set of bird banknotes to add to my 1937/1954 banknote collection, thinking that was just nuts considering how many must have passed through my hands at the time and I didn't save even one.

I was eying that set of bank notes that had all the same serial number.... once saw a bird series with the number "204" which is my area code... but never pulled the trigger.. and regret it every day now... *sigh*

i was surprised by the selling price of this piece..i knew lots of people would have some sort of interest in it, even my LCS was considering buying it for the store but I think I talked them out of it..however I will be getting to see the 1967 flip struck dollar in hand as they were the winners of it I'm pretty sure. I will also be getting my win from the auction which i'll post later on when in hand. I am very glad to see the prices seemed ok and I was also glad to win a coin and also will get to see the flip struck in the near future, this is a great outcome since I wanted to go to the show but summer school cancelled that for me  also, I hope that all you fellow collectors who found that coin or coins in this auction that you fell in love with were successful in your bidding  Feel free to call me Will.

At first thought it would not make the minimum either. I recall getting a look at it late 2013/early 2014 (a bargain at the time in comparison to the auction result) and then again at the Bell auction. But in the ancient Coin World electrotypes are highly collectible, especially when it's an electrotype of a rare piece in the British Museum collection (I have a few uniface ones in my collection). CNG sold one of a Sicilian Decadrachm a couple of years ago for $4750 USD http://www.cNGCoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=232555). A copy of an exceptional specimen but that Decadrachm is more plentiful than the 2 examples of the 1911 pattern Dollar in silver that exist. |
