I just thought I'd start a thread on Canadian paper money from 1937 and see if perhaps there's some interest. I know we have other members that collect paper money so please dig out those 1937 notes (any denomination) and just add them to this thread. I'll start it off with a one dollar note. I should have shown this a few days earlier as it's a birthday note for the 29th of March 1951. (making it more interesting is the 1937 issue was in circulation in 1951).

Yes, lovely note, Bill. Your note brings back some distant memories. I happened to be visiting my grandfather in Winnipeg in 1953 when the first Queen Elizabeth notes were appearing. Though I was not particularly a note collector at that time, my collector gene (I'm sure I have a double set) kicked in and I went to the local bank and got crisp examples of the old Geo. VI $1 through $20.

Shame you didn't snag a crisp $50 Jim, those seem to be always in demand...

I was only a kid and not really a paper collector. I was lucky to get as high as the $20. My biggest collecting interest then was actually stamps.

I rather like the classic "gods and goddesses" allegory theme on these notes. But they were kicked off Mount Olympus.

This is my only 1937 note. The note is nothing special but it has a great story. When I was about 14, my Dad had a client whose neighbour had died. He was a reclusive hoarder without heirs and the his house was being cleaned out by a trust company. You could barely walk in the door. Newspapers were stacked to the ceiling, junk and books everywhere. Everything was being sent to dumpsters out on the lawn and they said I could have anything I found of interest. Anyway, in a kitchen cupboard, on the floor surrounded by maybe 20 unopened very old bottles of grape juice, was this note!

Rear pic I have is horrible. I was devastated to notice a small fold in the bottom right corner un-noticed prior, to an other wise perfect note.

Wow some really nice notes so far.... going to have to go to the SDB and dig out mine!
The very first time I saw this was when I was a paper boy and one of my customers brought out a $1 note for me to look at. I thought it was super cool! The same year I got a brand new crisp "Birds" $50 note and from that point on I was looking at all my banknotes and coins and started collecting!

The 1937 series are wonderful indeed. Haven't found anything close to matching them anywhere. They are are in large enough supplies at the coin shows I attend and at respectable prices too so I think there is definitely an interest for them.

And a great topic for a thread! I recently bought one of each kind up to the $100 to form a 1937 set as well, not UNC but I admit that I expected the cost to be greater for the pretty decent condition that they were in. Aside from the rarer serial #s, they are definately available at a reasonable price and appear to be under-favoured compared to the 1954 series. Don't know why that might be. What I haven't done yet is learn what the image on the back of each is supposed to represent.

I agree some great notes here. I don't have any that are graded when I bought these most notes were still being sold raw. This is yet another two but it is from the last prefix issued which was also a short run of about 1/2 of normal 10 million. The allegory on the back was taken from a painting by an unknown artist. The Vignette engraver was H. P. Dawson. It's a Harvest allegory, seated female with fruits of harvest. Thanks to everyone this is great. Maybe someone has the $50-$100-$1000 Also remember any of the 1937 issue with the Osbourne/Towers signature combination are difficult to find in better grades and when you do be prepared to pay they don't come cheap Cheers, Bill
