One can collect all coins issued in 1900, 1800, 1700 etc., or 1999, 1888, 1777 etc. Such collection would show how the coinage change over the years.

You could also collect coins that have the face value of 1 pfennig or 1 heller. Considering the number of German states alone, that's a task for a lifetime (especially if collected by date).

Or different face values regardless of currency or origin, so a coin that reads "1", then "1-1/4", "1-1/2" etc.

Whatever comes my way, I'll take. I don't have much funding for coins, so planned purchases are the sort of thing that only happens a couple times a year - roll hunting is my affordable way of getting my fix.

That said, right now I do have a few sets going on in my head - eventually I want to get MS coins from important birthyears in my family, and right now I am able to say I have all the enhanced uncirculated coins put out by the mint (the Eagle, Kennedy half, the three years of NA dollars - unless they snuck one past me).
