Hi everyone, I have a few questions for you about the legality of coins from Cyprus in the USA. I assume that it is legal to own modern Cypriot coins, but are medieval and ancient coins legal? Second, I know that it is illegal to import ancient Cypriot coins, but is it illegal to, say, buy ancient Indian or Chinese coins on ebay from a dealer located in Cyprus? Thanks!

I don't know anything on the subject, but according to this possibly biased article:

http://www.accg.us/news/item/Import...t_Coins.aspx

The ban is on coins that are "of Cypriot types and issued prior to AD 235".

That would seem to not cover ancient Indian or Chinese coins, unless the customs agent thought they "looked Cypriot".

Yes, the modern coins from Cyprus are legal to own. In fact, I've actually found quite a few of them in coin lots.

Ancient Indian coins from a Cyprus dealer shouldn't be a problem (unless a customs agent doesn't know what he is looking at). You could have a problem if you buy them from someone in India though. (India does not allow their export) Chinese coins could be a little different. Chinese coins before 959 AD can't be legally inported to the US without a Chinese export license, or documentaion proving that they were removed from China before Jan 16 2009.

Here is a link to a export/import forms that includes a list of the type of coins (Italian, Cypriot, and Chinese) that can't be imported.

Cyprus uses the Euro nowadays and those coins are certainly legal to own in the USA. Also the modern pre-euro coinage isn't an issue at all.

I do believe that there are some restrictions on ancient coins, but that's for more countries. I do believe one needs an export license from Cyrpus in order to do so.

Thanks for the help on this, everyone.

So, just to double check, if I were to buy a medieval or ancient Indian or Iranian coin from a Cypriot ebay seller, I'd be fine, right?

Sure, as those coins are not the Cypriotic coins mentioned. Those coins are already out of their native environment anyway. Plus that I seriously doubt if any restrictions are in place for medieval stuff in Cyprus at all. I thought it was mainly classic era stuff.
