Hi everyone, I have a question about the reputation of ICG. I know that you should always "buy the coin, not the slab," but how fares the reputation of ICG nowadays? I know that they are a not as recognized as PCGS and NGC. But are ICG slabs considered accurate by most collectors? Thanks!

Most would consider 2nd tier (along with anacs) to the big two but reputable grader none the less. Not a basement slabbed by any means.

ANACS is certainly second-tier, but I don't think ICG has even that good a rep.

You hit the nail on the head as far as buy the coin not the slab. I have some ICG slabbed coins, most are over graded in MY opinion, but the coins are nice and I got the coins for what I was willing to pay.

How is ICG for authentication purposes? Meaning if I saw a coin that looked like it was a reasonable price for the grade I think it is, regardless of what ICG says, can I feel confident it is the real deal, not a counterfeit?

I've heard they grade some coins more accurately than others. For example I've heard they are terrible at grading Lincoln cents. With that said if I saw a nice coin at a raw price I'd buy it in an ICG slab. I would certainly not pay NGC/PCGS prices though (for example if the coin was ICG 66 I'd likely consider it a 64 at best in a PCGS or NGC holder).

Out of curiosity, are they known for doing a good job authenticating or grading ancients?

If you can get a good deal, I say pick it up as you can always take it out of the slab and resubmit it to NGC/PCGS for grading...

I've found ICG to be very good and ANACS top notch for my purposes. But my plan does not include resale, for that NGC and PCGS are the route. However, if you are interested in the coin and not the holder, buy the coin and not the holder. You will learn to grade like an expert in the field of your interest.
