from the looks of this, it looks like it was underground or on the ground for sometime. I would say its environmental.

Probably environmental damage to me.
U.S. nickels do have more copper in them than nickel, though.

I kinda thought it might be environmental, but what do I know?

My Dad received it in change a few days ago and I told him I knew the right place and people to ask!

Yeah, I just found a dime - same thing. I got all happy thinking it was missing the clad layer - oh well. I keep at it though.
