I would like for the circulation strikes to end. We can do without the zincolns.

But I would like to still see them in the mint / proof sets each year.

I hate the idea of getting rid of the penny - but for no logical reason. It would be logical to get rid of it.

and while you are at it get rid of the 1 and 2 dollar notes as well and join the rest of the World in the 21st Centaury.

Why? No one else joined us in going to the moon. We have been the trailblazers, the innovators, and the ones who share what we have with the world.

I would never pretend to know what is best for a country I have not grown up in and personally had a life long, first hand experience in being a part of their culture and history. Please note my next question is said in a non-negative way...

Why should we parrot the world? We have never had a need to before and have done well not only for ourselves, but the rest of the world has also benefited overall. A lot of countries even have their freedom today b/c we did not just "go with the flow."

There is no logical reason based on factual data to say the US needs to "join the club." To me its ridiculous to say the US needs do something b/c everyone else is. I grew up with a mother who always said, "if all your friends jump off a cliff will you jump too?"

NOT that using coins in other countries is foolish! But I certainly am glad the US does NOT parrot the world - especially with things like our Second Amendment and other freedoms!

The reality is that there is no club to join. Canada obviously has stopped making their penny, and Scandinavian countries sometimes don't have any coin worth less than our dime. Switzerland doesn't make a coin worth less than a nickel.

But the major currencies, the Euro, the Japanese Yen, and the British pound all make a tiny denomination coin worth roughly US 1 cent.

What is relatively unique is that the USA mints such a large quantity of pennies (even on a per capita basis). The Lincoln Penny was produced in total quantity under 200 billion from 1909 to 1982, but over 300 billion of the zinc pennies have been made from 1983 to the present. The production numbers far exceed that of other countries with similar small coins.

The penny is disposable, just like plastic sporks. Use once, toss aside.

We need to stop making cents.

And sporks. Use the dishwasher, people.

Yes stop making the cent but let it circulate. The metal lobby won't let that happen though.

No need to stop cents from circulating. They will disappear from circulation on their own.
Rest in Peace

My opinion is that it would be bad for the hobby. Many kids start coin collecting by buying Lincoln Penny folders and have fun filling them up. Without the penny in our midst, many potential future collectors would not be born.

Aside from my CRH, I have no use for pennies, nor does anybody else. Get rid of it already. Also, we could have 95% copper collector pennies then, and maybe the shield cent could even go away.

If they stop making the cent for circulation (and they should) it should also be removed from Mint and Proof sets. These are supposed to be representative of the current circulating coinage.

I like your line of thought there, Illegaltender.

So what about the half dollar and dollar coins? They should go, too, as both are NIFC.
Rest in Peace

If you only include circulating coins in the Proof and/or Mint sets that would equal a sad and lonely Roosevelt next to a run of multi-personality quarters.

If they stopped minting pennies (or cents as most call them), do you think they would be hoarded out of circulation? There's still a good amount of copper out there and those haven't been made in over 30 yrs!
