I recommend a new Red Book about every 5-10 years.
My current one is a 2013 that I got for free at one of the ANA Seminars.
The info in them is right at you fingertips.
Try to find all that in a short time AND in a format that you can easily do comparisons on your phone.
It would probably cost you more in connectivity time than the cost of the book.

I agree, the Red Book is a must have, even in the digital age. I always keep one handy.
Rest in Peace

I really like the 'Mega Red' edition. The official title is: A Guide Book of United States coins, 2nd Edition: The Official Red Book, Deluxe Edition, although it has MEGA RED prominently displayed on the cover. ;-)

Amazon has it for $31.93 (Prime eligible), and I imagine other book sellers' prices are in that ball park.

Here's my review of the book (on Amazon):

Verified Purchase

A scholarly, well-crafted, and accessible text that provides a plethora of facts, figures, and engaging stories about our country's numismatic history, along with most of the contemporary knowledge necessary to become an advanced collector. I say 'most', because, as other reviewers have noted, some coins receive less attention than others. If you specialize in a particular series, e.g., 20th century dollar coins, you might consider a text that focuses exclusively on such coinage.

But if you're looking for a comprehensive text that will provide the essentials on all U.S. coins, with encyclopedic coverage of the most popular series, e.g., Lincoln wheat cents, I highly recommend spending a little more money for this text versus the standard edition.

Nothing against the venerable Red Book, but the Mega Red provides five times as much information for less than three times the price. It's like getting a 1916-D Mercury dime in AU-50 for the VF-30 price. ;O)

I have all of the ones since the first edition. Not a great hobby to collect them all but sort of fun. I like looking up what a certain coin was worth 20 or 30 or 40 years ago. And too how some information is added where just not known before. The Red Book is almost a must today. Yes you could look up all the info in this book but why bother if you can just breeze through your own. No need to even turn on your computer to look something up.
Each new edition comes out in April. They are always dated a year ahead meaning next year a 2018 Edition will be out. This started way back in 1946 when the first one was issued and Whitman thought it would be smart to date if for the following year, 1947, not knowing if they would even continue with this book. This has never stopped with the dating one year ahead.

Reliable reference catalogues like the Red Book, Krause or Charlton are an educational investment that will pay off in the long run and are extremely affordable.

As others have stated, no batteries are required, you will get a lot of mileage out of the nearly 500 pages and they are a collaboration of many well respected numismatists in the hobby.

If you're still not convinced head over to Chapters or a similar bookstore and see for yourself.
