The Society of Medalists 99th Issue, 1979, by Donald A. Borja. Bronze, 73mm, reported mintage of 750: Comments from Borja included in the medal flyer: Quote: "My fascination of classical art and mythology inspired the challenge of merging antiquity with the concerns of our post-modern age -- the salvation of energy. The recognized power of the sun represents the epitomy of energy and I used Helios, the Sun God, to depict the sun's power. On the obverse I have portrayed Helios encompassed by a single neutron and proton, shackled by the bonds of present man's capabilities of harnessing solar energy. The reverse shows Helios freeing himself from bondage radiating his power from the sun. The horses are symbolic of mankind's search for the continuum of the purest form of energy. In the knowledge of Helios lies the force that mankind will enlighten tomorrow's future." MACO Archive Number 1930-001-099.

A 73mm MACO high relief medal would make one heck of a pocket piece...

Quote: A 73mm MACO high relief medal would make one heck of a pocket piece... Would need a pretty stout pocket for it. . . Thank you, jbuck and E&V. . .I'm not out for the entire series but some of the SOM issues are really appealing, as are some of the other MACO strikes. . .

Inaugurated in 1932, the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award Program recognizes high school juniors who have shown outstanding aptitude in mathematics and science. The program continues to this day and is overseen by the University of Rochester, home to B&L's principal R&D facility which was founded in 1853. Recipients receive the bronze uniface medal shown; the example below was attributed to 1963, and was struck by the Medallic Art Co. 2-1/4 x 1-11/16 inches. MACO specimen archive # 1949 - 013. Artist / Designer is unidentified ; MACO's archive states the artwork was "Customer Supplied." These are readily available via the usual e-commerce sites in a wide range of prices, depending on condition, original packaging, etc. My example was part of a local auction lot with another bronze medal and was less than $10.00 .

Beautiful medal, cptbilly! And that price is hard to hard to beat.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

You can find information about the award's manufacturers here (J. M. Galst, P. G. van Alfen. Ophthalmologia: Optica & Visio in Nummis. Wayenborgh, 2013.). I have with bakelite box copy.
