1901-S Barber quarter, PCGS G04 CAC This coin evokes pleasant memories. When I was about ten, nearly every summer day I would ride my balloon-tire one-gear bicycle up a mountainous county road 2.5 miles to a tiny mom & pop grocery/home to buy penny candy. The proprietors were an old couple made of stern stuff, but they eventually warmed to me. One day conversation turned to coins, and Mr. Schmidt (a WW1 vet) took me behind the curtain to the parlor. His collection was immense, at least in my young eyes, and yes, he had a 1901-S Barber quarter, his pride and joy found decades before in the grocery. That was long ago, but I still remember his passion for his collection and the twinkle in his eye when he showed me his discoveries. That day I was hooked, and afterwards in sheer joy I flew back down the mountain on my bike, with the wind in my hair and a fireball in my mouth. Decades passed. Of course I had to find a 1901-S reminiscent of the one I'd held. After years of scrimping and searching, I found this one, and although the odds are about 1000-to-1 against, it could be the same quarter! In fond remembrance, Mr. Schmidt, thank you for transferring your coin passion from one generation of collectors to another.
