Well, yeah. You could buy a 1794 dollar for that. Or a small house...

Can someone explain something to me:

Is it true that PCGS and PMG are the top currency graders now? I always read that CGA notes are not correctly graded...true or not?

Complicated subject. but the general answer is yes, PCGS and PMG are considered the top graders today, with CGA notes no longer accepted for sale on ebay, for example. CGA basically started the paper money grading business well before the other two got involved, but as time passed, the late-comers developed a reputation for more conservative standards and this has understandably gained a lot of traction.

As a very rough generalization, CGA's notes are usually thought to be about a point or so higher than what PCGS or PMG would grade, especially for uncirculated notes where centering is the primary numeric variable. I believe this is basically correct, and as a frequent buyer of CGA notes, it is easy to factor in that discount in your evaluation.

What is more subtle is the remarkable values that exist in CGA notes because of their orphan status. Their analysis of paper quality has always been top-drawer, even in the early holders, imo, and especially today with their OPQ designation. If you trust the paper, and adjust for the centering grade, then there are many opportunities. I have cut many CGA notes and resubmitted to PMG with considerable success.

I was just looking randomly through ebay and found this up for bid by CGA, they are auctioning 5 certs for $65. Very interesting!

To clarify, CGA notes can still be listed on ebay, but the numerical grade cannot be shown. Notwithstanding, I do occasionally see one get through.
