My wife works for the Visiting Nurse Association. Every year they sponsor the Stuart Air show. We volunteered this year. We were treated to a catered dinner on Friday evening at the airfield, followed by a special twilight air show and fireworks. On Sunday we worked the show. We arrived at 8am and the strip was near empty. I wondered up and down taking uninterupted pics of the A-10's the B-25 and the B-17 and B-24. climbing into the cargo bay of the B-25, walking thru the C-130 cargo bay and climbing into the cockpit.
The show started and the F-16 and F-15 just stopped the crowd as they roared by into a 90 degree climb and then dove into a almost strafing run. the A-10 was doing the same but when he went into "stealth" mode and it got very quiet..and BAM !! there he was roaring by. I really got some nice pics. I will get them developed this week.I wish the FAA would have allowed the jets to break the sound barrier but there would have been alot of broken glass. (windshields mostly) If you have ever experienced hearing and seeing F-15,16 or A-10 break the sound barrier it will make your heart stop and your ears ring !
Here is the link to the air show

Cool! A couple of years ago the Blue Angels were here in town for a show, and since I live a stone's throw from the airport here in town I got to see the show for free! Some of the planes buzzed so low over my house I could wave at the pilots, and they kept setting my neighbor's car alarm off. He finally smartened up and turned it off after the sixth or seventh time he had to run out and disarm it! [:0]

grovey, I didn't know the A10 Warthog could break the sound barrier? Or, perhaps we are not thinking about the same plane as the A10's that fly around here are heavily armored and famous for flying "so slow" when needed. Do know their guns shoot so hard on a strafing mission that they must fly full throttle, when using them, to keep the guns from stopping the plane in mid-air. Now that is what I call recoil!!!

Hey Grovey,

I really love air shows. I attend the one they have here in Vegas each year. For some reason I just can't help being in love with the F-86 Sabre Jet. I know its old but what a neat plane to watch fly. I would kill for the chance to fly one. Outside the F4U bent wing Corsaire the F-86 is my favorite palne.

A-10'S are sub-sonic. They fly about 440/450 mph. When I was in the service my barracks on one base was near the end of a few runways. Quite a sight and incredible sounds, not to mention shaking the building when flipping on the after burners during certain take off manuvers! Back then it was F-4'S, F-106'S F101,S F-5/T38'S and even a few old T-33'S. The Harriers were quite a sight and very loud. The worst shrill aircraft was the occasional B58 that would come in from Canada. They could wake you up out of a coma!!! Mike

I have been in love with planes most of my life but due to my remote location we only get to see what uses the local ranges, and one of them closed a few years back, and we we may encounter at an airport or airshow. Planes is one of those, if I had it to do over, possibilites. Guess I will have to remember in my next life?

Mike,
I specificallty remember being stationed in Ft.Hood, Tx. We witnessed on more than one occasion a live fire A-10 demo. The A-10's would go into a low altitude strafing run and literally destroy the tanks (war surplus old tanks). in the field. One more than one occassion we had many cracked windshields as they broke the sound barrier. I included a link for the A-10. top speed at low level altitude 834 mph.
http://www.geocities.com/tomcatter_...10specs.html

I also found this regarding speed of sound (sound barrier)

This critical speed is known as Mach 1 and is approximately 1,225 km/h (761 mph) at sea level.

How's-This-For-A-Veterans-Day-!!

I know what you mean Steve! I feel the same way about the F-101 Voodoo. I grew up with the jet flying around all the time and going through the sound barrier. In the summertime there was a meadow I used to go to and just lay down and watch them. And they look exactly like that postcard. BTW, I got that on ebay but it was originally sold in vending machines, I believe for a $1 apiece in the 60's.

grovey, you are confusing km/h with mph. Top speed is still sub sonic! There are many incarnations of this aircraft with varying performance windows between 450 and 525 MPH, but none capable of supersonic flight. At any rate it is an awesome thing to see decked out for combat. See your own details...below those some additional flight info..
Performance:

-Top speed: at low altitude 834 km/h (450,81 kts); at 20.000 ft 675 km/h (355 kts)
-Cruise speed: 507 km/h (274 kts)
-Rate of climb: 10-30 m/s (32,8-98,4 ft/s)
-Service ceiling: 13.400 m (43.963 ft)
-Range with max. fuel: 4.220 km (2.289 nm)
-G-limit: +5,93
-Take-off run: 442-1220 m
-Landing run: 396-652 m

This critical speed is known as Mach 1 and is approximately 1,225 km/h (761 mph) at sea level.

PERFORMANCE (at max T.O. weight except where indicated):

Never exceed speed: 450 knots (834 km/h; 518 mph) Max combat speed at S/L, 'clean': 390 knots (722 km/h; 449 mph) Combat speed at 1525 m (5000 ft) with six Mk 82 bombs: 385 knots (713 km/h; 443 mph) Cruising speed at S/L: 300 knots (555 km/h; 345 mph) Cruising speed at 1525 (5000 ft): 342 knots (634 km/h; 394 mph) Stabilised 45 degrees dive speed below 2440 m (8000 ft), AUW of 15,932 kg (35,125 lb): 260 knots (481 km/h; 299 mph) Max rate of climb at S/L at basic design weight: 1828 m (6000 ft)/min T.O. distance: at max T.O. weight: 1372 m (4500 ft) at forward airstrip weight: 426 m (1400 ft) Landing distance: at max T.O. weight: 762 m (2500 ft) at forward airstrip weight: 382 m (1250 ft) Operational radius: close air support and escort, 2 h loiter, 20 min reserves: 250 nm (463 km; 288 miles) reconnissance: 400 nm (740 km; 460 miles) deep strike: 540 nm (1000 km; 620 miles)

This thread reminds me of a funny saying my grandma had. She just passed away about 3 weeks ago at 95. Coincidentally, her and my Grandpa's wedding anniversary was on November 11, originally called Armistice Day, the end of WW1. She used to say, "Well, one war ended, another began!", and then she'd laugh.

Cool post, I am into aircraft too. Love em. Favorite is the F8 Crusader, used for a very long time, might still be on some carriers today. Gotta love that intake under the nose. I try to get to the air shows around here when I can. Just not enough military bass around to see the really cool stuff.

Mike, I read your post and I too could not find anythingff PUBLISHED. that would acknowlegde the speed of the a-10. What I am trying to say without a big debate is this. I was there, so were several hundred other military. I just happened to be standing next to a 2 star General and 2 Colonels, Me, a lowly Airman 3rd class.Anyway my story is that after they flew and I heard the boom for the first time I asked the Colonel standing next to me what that was. After he explained it they found 15 cracked windshields.(I witnessed it several more times in the m0onbths following). We then witnessed the awesome power of the A-10 machine guns and as a souvenier I had until a few years ago an A-10 shell.
When I was stationed on a Nuclear Submarine base in the 80's (civilian Police dept)If the submariners were asked how fast and deep a sub can go the answer was always. at least 30 knots and deeper than 600 ft. Not everything is meant for general knowledge.

Like Forrest Gump said "That's all I have to say about that". and we can agree to disagree if needed.

Well in that case I would have to leave the 1000's of pages of data and reports as bad information and the mechannics of the design that do not allow for hypersonic flight as well as inadequte thrust to weight ratio and an unsafe flight speed over 500MPH.(google the A10). Another Government cover up? Perhaps the ordinance concussions did some damage? I agree to disagree! Peace, Mike
