I don't have time tonight to get out a dictionary and look up "numismatist." However, to me, the term has always meant "One who collects and studies coins and other types of currency."

Does one have to be knowledgable in the various technical aspects of the hobby to be a numismatist?

Depends on whom you ask. Some think that you must be a member of some collecting organization to be considered serious. Others, feel as if you must be a recognized person, to be serious.

Like everything else, opinions are free, but do not require any thought to be uttered.

Personally, I believe that to be a "numismatist", only YOU can decide if you are or are not.

If a third party grader and a high volume seller both declare
that peru has pesos instead of soles
I am going to say I am a numismatist

Webster defines numismatics as "the study or collection of coins, tokens, and paper money and sometimes related objects (as medals)"

A numismatist is one who studies or collects...

Therefore, we are all numismatists. We are all students.

Numismatologist - "One versed in numismatology"

Numismatology - "The collection and study of money (and coins in particular)."

The English language is just amazing. So many words to say the same thing. It does make us all sound so much more impressive to call ourselves numismatologists. One might think we all had PHD's.
