Hate to say it, but your were intending to hold these rolls for another 40 years to double your money, crck them open, hopefully you find something unique as a nice error or similar.

i wasn't really planning to make any money on these by keeping them together, I just think it would be my job as a numismatist to keep them together as they have been from the start..as coin collectors we preserve and cherish the historic side of things after all

Liquidating at a later date could work out better in rolls I think.

I said yes I would. But to be clear, I'd keep a few intact and the rest open.

Edit: The matching bag with the rolls is definitely a cool piece of history, but I wouldn't think you'd need 48 of them. As for value, I don't see them appreciate it much, so you'd be keeping them as a historic piece more than anything. So maybe I'd keep something like 5-10 rolls and the bag and open the rest

that's a good approach actually..i may consider doing this

There is nothing really special about a 1977 penny unless there is a huge clip or some kind of cool error, as proven 40 years latter you could purchase this bag for a bargain over face, there is a good reason for this, just my 2 cents worth.
