That's interesting, I just noticed you already had a picture of the reverse, I'm curious to know what others can determine.

Are you sure it's not a chunk of something stuck on the coin?

Is it metal?

hi cwb...it has been gouged, there's nothing stuck in that area , what's weird is the inside looks plated, as deep as this is I don't see any zinc, had to happen to the planchet before strike, no ?

If the plating is there, it is a struck though. (possible wood) If it is missing, then it is damaged. But it looks plated to me.

hey john, that's exactly what I think happen. the zinc blank was defective before the plating, had to be because the inside of this area is plated....right?

I haven't figured it out yet, but I don't think it's a struck through.

Part of the area appears folded over, like a lamination would. The way the area stays the same across the head doesn't fit right in my mind either.

I am leaning towards some kind of planchet flaw before it was plated.

What is the weight of this coin?

It could have been damaged as it was punched from the Zinc sheet. If anything got under the punch an impression would be left before plating. I have seen large scale punches operating (not in the mint), they work fast and punch very hard.
