Back in the 19th century these were not considered to be fakes but were actually an identification aid for very rare dates or varieties in an era before photography or when photographs were still crude and not commonplace. A collector who had a very rare piece might have electro made of it and send them to others with whom he corresponded. They could be used as a hole filler until a genuine specimen was obtained and could be used a a comparison piece to confirm an attribution. Since many of these were at one time in major collections they also developed a level of desirability and are collectible in their own right. The thing is, they are in many cases actually rarer than the rare dates or varieties they copy, and are often made from one of the best examples known. Some electros have their own unique history such as the electrotype of the Dexter specimen that was used to illustrate the catalog for the Berlin sale in which it first appeared. This is the only electro I know of made from one of the actual 1804 dollars. I don't know who owns it today but I bet it is worth a fair sum. then there are the electrotype sets that were made up of the proof Half Cents of the 1840's. Those coins are quite valuable and few could afford to add either the originals or the restrikes to their collections. But back in the 19th century a few sets of electrotypes were made of these proof Half Cents. They are still quite scarce but a much more affordable way of adding those coins to your collection. (I have three of them and I would love to be able to finish out the set.) So you see like many other things these "fakes" have their own place in numismatic history. (Jules Reiver had a very nice collection of electrotypes, and they brought very strong money at the 2007 EAC sale.) Report this Post to the Staff
eaglefoot Pillar of the Community United States 6326 Posts	Posted 03/29/2008 10:03 pm Kk.....I'm back from the auction and the 1793 Cent was indeed a "Gallery Mint" Copy...... It was even clearly printed on the coin..."copy"....no buffing off or anything. And it was in an envelope which said Gallery Mint Copy on it.......so at least they weren't trying to fool anybody. There were a few other interesting coins....I walked away with two Large cents in really decent shape....a Half Dime......a few Morgans....a couple of Peace dollars..... There was a blank penny planchet coin.......an "offset error" penny.....uncirculated condition War Nickels.....wheaties....IHP's. There was also a "Fractional Note" there.....pretty old.......a very small average condition one.....but didn't know enough about them to bid on it..It went for $47.00.....just couldn't pay that kind of money BLIND and espicially when everything seemed to be going higher than it ought to have......(happens at auctions....) All kinds of foreign coins...old and new....but I wasn't there for those...nor am I educated enough to offer bids on them ! Somebody paid $65.00 for a really "bad" condition " Flying Eagle cent".....so many coins went for waaaaaaaaayyyyy tooooo much money!......There were A LOT of coin collectors there ...amateur and otherwise I suspect.(not that I'm an expert, but it was obvious there were all kinds there and they had little interest in the other stuff at the auction, that doesn't bode well for good deals for me!...(sucks when they show up at these estate auctions....sometimes there can be wonderful deals!) Other than the two Large Cents that I got........not a lot there very "eyebrow raising".....but .....I walked away with enough to make the "effort" worthwhile. Dissappointed with the main focus of the 1793 Cent though........OH AND BY THE WAY IT WAS IN GREAT CONDITION AND IT SOLD FOR $13.00!....... For $13, it might have been worth it to have as an educational piece! Did you take any pictures of the other stuff? At the very least, I am waiting on pictures of the two large cents you got! I've paid more than that for them and they are becoming harder to find now that the Gallery Mint is Kaput. They are better quality than the copies produced by the other private mints. The chains were going for $50 each for awhile. They retreated for a while when the company that bought out Gallery announced that they were going to continue operating GMM as before, but now hat it's gone I would expect them to start climbing again. I DID take my camera.....but I just felt "weird" about "shouldering my way in there through the crowd and taking pictures of the coins, so I left it in the truck and decided not to do it !........sorry bud! This week I plan to make my "second" attempt at photographing coins.....and I'll start with the two recently acquired Large Cents !..... Condor101............ I "did" think about buying it anyway.....it was only between two people and the guy won it for $13.00........I spent over $200.00 there......what's another $13.00 ?.......I don't know how bad the guy who got it...wanted it though ! Had I tried, he may have kept going up to $20.00-$30.00-$40.00.....who knows now I guess......But I do thank you for the information.. .. I learned A LOT right there !......appreciate it much !.....
