that is complete bunk.

I have found the following when dealing with staff at the (winnipeg) mint boutique;
1) probably a good 80% of them act like know-it-all's, this is not always a bad thing, but often when I am asking I know the facts, so I know when I am being BS'd.
2) stories seem to change depending on which staff member you speak to.
3) The mint DOES sell rolls of coins atthe boutique, but they specialize in selling items which are catered to "collectors" eg: special wrapped rolls (the regular stuff is now in shrink wrap plastic).
4) To the best of my knowledge, the boutiques only offer to sell rolls of current calender year circulation coins.
5) the mint used to offer selling rolls through their online sales, but seem to only now offer that to the small percentage of buying club membership - which is had by purchasing product from the mint in excess of a given dollar amount - something north of $1k iirc

I purchased two rolls from a local retailer;
You had better believe they purchased them from the mint.

A person could just call the boutique and say "hello, do you still sell mint rolls of the current year's coins at a 5% premium over face value like you used to."

I know they don't because I called but if you would like to know for certain for yourself give them a call, maybe they'll answer differently?

So there were more regular loonies minted in 2016 than in 2015 or 2014? So much for the rumor mill. Missed that one by a country mile.

Since the mint stopped disclosing exact details of what was minted, it is still my option that during the 2016 calendar year, both regular 2016 loons, as well as 2017 loons, and possible 2017 circulation loons were minted;
I am also of the mindset that during the 2016 calendar year that 2016 & 2017 polar bear $2 coins, as well as possibly 2017 circulation $2 coins were minted.

To those who scoff at me, please point out where there is mention of 2017 polar bear $2 coins being minted during 2016 - because there is no mention of it - but we know they were minted because of THIS thread.

That one coin indisputably proves that the mint isn't being 100% forward with what it is minting.
Sure it minted X number of Y coins, but anything more broken down which might assist collectors is no longer provided by the mint.

It's really too bad, because it sure helped us to know exactly what & how much was minted;
EG: 2006P penny, 1991 Quarter...

In both of those years, I observed a flood of new coins prior to the year's end.
I have yet to found a single circulating 2016 loon.

I'm not sure I follow this. The only circ coins for 2017 minted so far are the Canada150 designs and the 25 cent Stanley Cup. Any of the regular designs dated 2017 are in NCLT packaging and not circulation coins...ie. not available through the banking system or at face value.

This table seems pretty clear unless we are to believe the Mint is producing inaccurate audited annual reports. Not saying that isn't possible but I don't see anything to suggest that here.

Mintages-For-2016-

The only explanation I can suggest for the early 2017 toonie is that it was considered NCLT and the Mint has not yet provided details of NCLT coins produced in 2016 as far as I know.

EDIT:

hmm...

that does appear to be rather air tight.

time will tell as to how accurate that is.

hopefully I didn't waste too much on these 2016 loons!

As I was told by the nice person who runs the bulk order dept. also takes orders from the banks central depots for coinage, the country is divided into 4 to 5 districts, the RCM only send coins on demand, if TD has enough recycle loonies in inventory there will be no orders and the same goes for the other banks because it cost money to ship coins. I assume there is a special ministers order to circulate the 150 coinage and the vast majority of the 2016 regular loonies are just sitting in storage waiting for demand orders or the ARP program to cause a shortage. It's hard to contradict the published figure without some inside info.

Remember guy found a 2017 toon in Winnipeg in a field in summer 2016.

People that hunt change and rolls aren't finding the 2016 loon so who knows something's up with that report I think.

I have tried pointing this out.

It has been suggested that that coin would have been struck as non-circulation, and therefore not included in yearly mintages - but frankly, I am skeptical of this...

If they become common, maybe I'll be proven wrong.

Until that time, I will remain firmly entrenched in my skepticism.

Most industries like the auto introduces next years model a few months ahead, that 2017 toonie was probably just a preproduction trial piece, how it got out is another story. Whether these 2016 loonies are minted in 2016 or 2015 makes no difference if the mintage is in the 20 million range. The reason we haven't seen many 2016 loonie in change is as mentioned and the influx of special 150 coinage
